Fueling Families With Plants & Protein

Bean There, Done That

January 4, 2017

January 6th is National Bean Day, which makes all of us here at Veggie Fries very happy. Why? Because in addition to farm-fresh vegetables and potatoes, beans (specifically white beans or chick peas) are also in all four of our flavors!

According to a recent Huffington Post report:

Beans provide myriad health benefits, and they fit into several different food groups: Although they are rich in complex carbs like breads and starches, as a plant-based food, they feel right at home in the vegetable group, offering an array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, like their veggie companions. They can also hold their own in the protein group, supplying protein aplenty. Unlike some other members of this group, beans provide little to no fat and are cholesterol-free. In fact, beans actually lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels instead of potentially causing them to increase, as some animal proteins have been shown to do.

Also, according to Health.com: Beans may get a bad rap for making people gassy, but that’s no reason to cut them out of your diet. Experts recommend you consume up to 3 cups of the legumes a week—because they are so good for your health. And the more you eat, the less likely you are to have tummy trouble. “People who eat beans on a consistent basis experience less gas and bloating than people who consume them less often,” says Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, Health’s contributing nutrition editor.

That’s what we’ve bean saying all these years! So give beans a chance and try any of our four delicious flavors… Broccoli & Potatoes, Carrot & Potatoes, Kale & Tuscan Herbs, and Chickpea & Red Pepper!
